While we almost always consider addiction to be something negative, that isn't necessarily always the case.
If a person claimed to be addicted to generosity, reading, writing or any other positive activity, we would hardly consider that to be a bad thing.
In such cases it might be more accurate to say that we are committed to such behavior than addicted.
There are of course many quite negative addictions.
Any addiction that causes significant harm to the addict is negative by definition.
When evaluating addictions in this way it is necessary to weigh the benefits derived as opposed to the resulting damage. If the benefits are great and the damage relatively minor then perhaps the addiction is not negative after all.
When one is evaluating their life choices and their addictive behaviors it is important to do such a cost benefit analysis.
In doing so it is advisable to include the observations of objective friends, since our evaluation is possibly somewhat skewed.
