There's hardly a hotter topic these days than that of AI or Artificial Intelligence. Everywhere a person turns they are confronted by advertisers and institutions touting there adoption and usage of AI. It almost seems as if only Neanderthals are reluctant to use AI for virtually everything.
I wanted to comment on the topic and thought I would approach it from a slightly different angle. That is, to speak about the value of human intelligence.
When I chose AI: Authentic Intelligence for my headline, I was attempting to draw what I consider to be a very important distinction between the two types of intelligence.
Let me make it clear that I am anything but a modern day Luddite. I am in no way opposed to the usage of AI. As will become clear shortly, I am of the opinion that some uses of Artificial Intelligence are beneficial and benign, while other uses are detrimental and malignant.
As an author I consider Artificial Intelligence an excellent research tool and use it regularly. Also as an author, I refuse to turn to Artificial Intelligence for creativity. I am happy to offload my research to Artificial Intelligence, but not my creativity.
This is what I mean by Authentic Intelligence. I wish to be recognized for my own work and not that of another person or artificial entity.
That's the first thing. The second involves my concern that a reliance on Artificial Intelligence for creativity will cause our ability to create to atrophy in the same way our muscles would atrophy if we were carried about by another rather than ambulating under our own power.
