I promised myself that I would avoid politics here since I want to reach a broader audience, and discuss ideas rather than ideologies.
So, while what follows is drawn from my observation of the current political climate, it is an endorsement of no political position, party or politician. It is the idea I am interested in.
As the headline suggests, the topic is dehumanization. My understanding of the term is as follows. It is an attempt to portray one's opponents or enemies as being less than human. They are not just wrong, they are inhuman. The aim is to make it justifiable to attack or harm them since they are not fully human.
The most horrific example of this is of course the 'Holocaust'. That momentous tragedy was only made possible by the propaganda of the Nazis to dehumanize the Jewish population so that their German neighbors would stand passively by while those whom they had once greeted on the sidewalk were now hauled away in trainloads to be exterminated.
Thank god there were people like Anne Frank and Oskar Schindler who did not succumb to the evil, but instead did all within their power to save as many human beings as they could.
Look around you today and you will see that the same sort of dehumanization is leading to violence, murder and the excuse for such heinous behavior.
This does not bode well my friends.
