Fairness

The concept of fairness is one which is bandied about a good deal but is not really thought through sufficiently.

What does it mean for something to be fair?

In some cases it is quite obvious while in many others it is less so.

For example, if you and I are assigned a science project together and I do all of the work and you get all of the credit, that is obviously not fair.

On the other hand if we both work on the project equally and are credited equally that is just as obviously fair.

Different professions pay differing wages. Some who work no harder than others make far more money. Is that fair? In cases such as this it is the market or consumers who decides how much to compensate the various professionals.

It is claimed by those with Socialistic tendencies that it is unfair for the capitalist to earn so much money and the laborer to earns so much less. Is that really unfair? I believe it is only considered so by those who misunderstand economics and how markets function.

Claims of unfairness are often made out of envy and not from objectively determined criteria.
