Tolerance & Judgment

There are two terms which are best understood when considered together. They are judgment and tolerance, The reason this is the case is because judgment always precedes tolerance. If I judge something you are espousing to be correct and/or good, then no tolerance is required. If on the other hand I judge something you are espousing to be incorrect and/or bad then the correct civil response is to be tolerant in the sense that I believe that you are entitled to your opinion, even if I find it ridiculous or even appalling. Tolerance does allow for me to oppose your position as effectively and adamantly as I can.

Jesus was purported to have cautioned men not to judge, lest they themselves be judged.

I don't adhere to that viewpoint. I much prefer that of Ayn Rand who suggested that we judge and prepare to be judged.

What we need is more, not less judgment, but seasoned with tolerance.
