We're All Capitalists

As I have pointed out on many occasions and in many places, people often use words which the seem to think they understand owing to the frequency with which they are used, when in fact they cannot articulates a coherent and accurate definition of the word.

The word 'Capitalism' is a perfect example. Neither the Socialists of the left nor the Conservatives of the right are able to offer an accurate definition of the words meaning and thus cannot effectively attack or defend the idea. You cannot explain, defend or appropriately attack an idea or concept which you do no understand well.

So, I'm going to offer up a simple and therefore understandable explanation of the term in defense of the claim I made in the headline.

Let's begin by defining the root of the term capitalism and capitalist.

That root is capital. So, what is capital? It is that which we have labored to acquire and not spent on our immediate needs but instead invested in that which will pay us some form of dividend in the future.

A few simple examples should suffice to make clear what I mean.

If you have money in any saving device, at savings account, a CD, a retirement account, etc. that savings constitutes capital and since you are the owner of capital, then you are by definition a capitalist.

If you spent money which you came by honestly to become educated or to learn a trade, that knowledge or skill is capital, and thus, by definition you are a capitalist.

If you have acquired tools, equipment or devices to help you accomplish goals, all of those are a form of capital making you a capitalist.

If you have equity in your home, that is capital and you dear reader are a capitalist.

It is literally impossible to find a functioning adult who does not have one of these forms of capital or something similar.

So, while in theory Socialists may deride Capitalism to their heart's content, the reality is that in practice they are Capitalists. We all are.
